Estremoz Castle: A Royal Residence with Breathtaking Views Guide

Perched atop the highest point of Estremoz, the Castelo de Estremoz, or Estremoz Castle, is a commanding presence that dominates the town's skyline. More than just a fortress, it's a former royal residence steeped in history, offering panoramic views of the Alentejo landscape. Prepare to be captivated by its imposing architecture, rich history, and the sense of grandeur that permeates its ancient walls. The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when it was built by King Afonso III. Over the centuries, it served as a royal residence, witnessing significant events in Portuguese history. King Dinis and Queen Saint Isabel resided here, and it was within these walls that Queen Isabel passed away in 1336. The castle's architecture reflects its long and varied history, with elements of Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline styles. Today, a portion of the castle has been transformed into a luxurious pousada (historic hotel), allowing guests to experience the castle's grandeur firsthand. A visit to the Castelo de Estremoz is an unforgettable experience. Explore the castle grounds, admire the imposing walls and towers, and imagine life within its royal chambers. Climb to the top of the keep for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, stretching as far as the eye can see. Even if you're not staying at the pousada, you can still visit the castle grounds and enjoy the stunning views. While in Estremoz, be sure to try the local wines, which are produced in the Alentejo region and are known for their rich flavors and full bodies. Many local restaurants offer wine pairings with their traditional dishes, providing a perfect culinary experience.
