Conímbriga: Journey Through Roman Portugal Guide

Step back in time at Conímbriga, one of the largest and best-preserved Roman settlements in Portugal. Located near Condeixa-a-Nova, this archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of Roman citizens during the 1st to 5th centuries AD. Explore remarkably intact mosaics, impressive public baths, and the remnants of grand villas, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Portuguese countryside. Conímbriga's history stretches back to the Iron Age, but it was under Roman rule that the city flourished. Conquered by Augustus in the 1st century AD, it became a significant urban center in the province of Lusitania. The city experienced periods of prosperity and decline, eventually being abandoned in the 6th century due to Suebic invasions. The site remained largely forgotten until excavations began in the late 19th century, revealing the incredible treasures we see today. Visitors can wander through the excavated streets, marvel at the intricate mosaics depicting scenes from mythology and daily life, and explore the Casa dos Repuxos (House of the Fountains), a luxurious villa with a sophisticated water system. The Conímbriga Museum houses a collection of artifacts unearthed at the site, providing further context and insight into the lives of the people who once called this place home. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to the Roman era at Conímbriga, the surrounding region offers delicious Portuguese cuisine, including roasted meats, fresh seafood, and local wines.
