Vista do Rei: Where Legends Meet Breathtaking Views Guide

The Miradouro da Vista do Rei, or King's View Lookout, is arguably the most iconic viewpoint on São Miguel Island in the Azores. Perched on the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera, it offers a panoramic vista of the twin lakes, Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) and Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake), nestled within the volcanic crater. The contrasting colors of the lakes, a result of different algae and sunlight reflection, create a truly unforgettable sight. This is a must-see destination for any visitor to the Azores, providing unparalleled photo opportunities and a chance to connect with the island's dramatic natural beauty. The name "Vista do Rei" (King's View) originates from a visit by King D. Carlos I and Queen D. Amélia in 1901. The viewpoint was specifically constructed to provide them with the best possible view of the Sete Cidades caldera. While the original structure has been updated over the years, the essence of the experience remains the same: to witness the majesty of nature from a privileged vantage point. The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, located nearby, adds a touch of eerie intrigue to the landscape, a stark reminder of ambitious projects that never fully materialized. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Vista do Rei. Of course, the primary activity is simply taking in the stunning views and capturing them with your camera. Hiking trails lead from the viewpoint along the caldera rim, offering different perspectives of the lakes and surrounding landscape. For the adventurous, paragliding opportunities are available, providing a unique aerial view of the Sete Cidades. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the viewpoint itself, nearby villages offer traditional Azorean cuisine, including fresh seafood and hearty stews.
