José Saramago Municipal Library Guide
Literary Sanctuary: Find Inspiration at Óbidos' Literary Gem Guide
Step into a world where literature and history intertwine at the José Saramago Municipal Library in Óbidos. Housed within the stunning Igreja de São Tiago (Church of Saint James), this library offers a unique and enchanting experience for book lovers and history buffs alike. Imagine browsing shelves filled with literary treasures within the walls of a former church – it's an unforgettable sight! The Igreja de São Tiago, originally built in the 12th century, has witnessed centuries of Óbidos' history. It served as a royal chapel and even hosted royal weddings. After suffering damage over time, the church was beautifully restored and repurposed as a library in 2013, honoring the Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese author José Saramago. The transformation preserved the church's architectural beauty while creating a modern and inviting space for reading and learning. Beyond simply browsing the books, visitors can admire the church's architecture, including its vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows. The library often hosts literary events, workshops, and exhibitions, making it a vibrant cultural hub. Don't miss the opportunity to climb to the upper level for a panoramic view of the library and the surrounding town. And while you're in Óbidos, be sure to indulge in the local specialty, *Ginjinha*, a cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup – a perfect complement to a literary afternoon!
