St. Mary's Basilica Guide
Hear the Hejnał: A Gothic Masterpiece in Kraków's Heart Guide
St. Mary's Basilica, or Kościół Mariacki, is a breathtaking Gothic church that dominates Kraków's Main Market Square. Its towering spires and intricate facade are a must-see for any visitor to the city. Prepare to be awestruck by the stunning stained glass windows, the vibrant polychrome interior, and the world-renowned Veit Stoss altarpiece, a masterpiece of late Gothic sculpture. The basilica's history stretches back to the 13th century, though the current Gothic structure was largely completed in the 14th century. Legend has it that the church was built on the site of an earlier wooden church destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The two towers, unequal in height, are steeped in folklore, with one story claiming they were built by two brothers, one of whom murdered the other out of jealousy. The higher tower is where the city's famous hejnał mariacki, a trumpet call, is played every hour, breaking off abruptly in memory of a trumpeter who was shot while warning the city of an impending attack. Visitors can explore the basilica's interior, marveling at the Veit Stoss altarpiece (requiring a separate ticket for closer viewing), and attend mass. Don't miss the opportunity to climb the higher tower for panoramic views of Kraków (separate ticket required). The hejnał mariacki is played every hour, 24 hours a day, and can be heard throughout the Main Market Square. While inside, take a moment to appreciate the stunning blue ceiling dotted with golden stars, a relatively recent addition that enhances the church's ethereal beauty. Kraków's culinary scene is rich, but near the Main Market Square, you'll find traditional Polish restaurants serving pierogi, kielbasa, and other local delicacies.
