Main Market Square Guide
The Heartbeat of Kraków: A Timeless Gathering Place Guide
The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) in Kraków is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe and a vibrant hub of activity. Surrounded by historic buildings, charming cafes, and bustling market stalls, it's the perfect place to soak in the atmosphere of Kraków. From the iconic Cloth Hall to the majestic St. Mary's Basilica, the square is a feast for the eyes and a testament to Kraków's rich history. The square dates back to the 13th century, when Kraków was granted city rights. It quickly became the center of trade and commerce, attracting merchants from across Europe. Over the centuries, the square has witnessed countless historical events, from royal processions to public executions. The Cloth Hall, originally a center for cloth trade, has been rebuilt and expanded over the centuries and remains a central feature of the square. Visitors can explore the Cloth Hall, browse the souvenir stalls, and admire the architecture of the surrounding buildings. Be sure to visit St. Mary's Basilica to hear the hourly trumpet call (Hejnał Mariacki) played from the tower. Enjoy a coffee or meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants lining the square, and watch the world go by. The square is also a popular venue for festivals, concerts, and other events. The square is a great place to try Obwarzanek Krakowski, a ring-shaped bread product that is boiled and sprinkled with salt, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, etc., before being baked. It is a traditional street food in Kraków.
