Neptune's Fountain Guide
Neptune's Fountain: Gdansk's Maritime Heartbeat Guide
Prepare to be captivated by Neptune's Fountain, the undisputed centerpiece of Gdansk's Długi Targ (Long Market). This magnificent bronze statue, depicting the Roman god of the sea, stands as a powerful symbol of Gdansk's maritime history, its connection to the Baltic Sea, and its prosperity as a major trading port. More than just a fountain, it's a work of art, a historical landmark, and a beloved meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The fountain was originally constructed in the early 17th century, commissioned by the city council to celebrate Gdansk's maritime power and trade. Designed by Abraham van den Blocke and cast by Peter Husen, it was completed in 1633. Over the centuries, Neptune's Fountain has faced various challenges, including being dismantled and hidden during World War II to protect it from damage. Thankfully, it was restored to its former glory and continues to stand proudly in the heart of the city. Legend has it that Gdansk's famous Goldwasser liqueur originated from the fountain, created when Neptune, annoyed by the coins thrown into the basin, struck the water with his trident, turning them into gold. A visit to Neptune's Fountain is a must for any visitor to Gdansk. Admire the intricate details of the statue, from Neptune's powerful pose to the sea creatures adorning the basin. Toss a coin into the fountain for good luck and soak in the lively atmosphere of the Długi Targ. The surrounding area is filled with charming cafes and restaurants, perfect for enjoying a meal or a drink while admiring the view. For a truly Gdansk experience, try some fresh seafood or a traditional Polish dish like żurek (sour rye soup).
