Long Market Guide

Stroll Through History: The Heart of Gdansk's Golden Age Guide

The Long Market (Długi Targ) is the main thoroughfare of Gdansk's Old Town, a vibrant and picturesque pedestrian street lined with beautifully restored buildings, shops, restaurants, and cafes. It's the heart of the city and a must-see for any visitor. The Long Market is a perfect place to soak in the atmosphere of Gdansk, admire the architecture, and enjoy the lively street life. The Long Market has been the center of Gdansk's commercial and social life for centuries. During the city's Golden Age in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a hub of trade and prosperity. The magnificent buildings that line the street, such as the Artus Court and the Golden Gate, are testaments to this rich history. The street was heavily damaged during World War II but has been meticulously reconstructed to its former glory. Walking along the Long Market is an activity in itself. Admire the ornate facades of the buildings, browse the shops selling amber jewelry and local crafts, and stop for a coffee or a meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Neptune Fountain, a symbol of Gdansk, and the Artus Court, a former meeting place for merchants. During the summer months, the Long Market is often filled with street performers and musicians, adding to the lively atmosphere. Gdansk is known for its pierogi (dumplings), fresh seafood, and Goldwasser (a herbal liqueur with flecks of gold). Many restaurants along the Long Market offer these local specialties.
