Ollantaytambo: A Living Inca Town and Fortress Guide

Discover Ollantaytambo, a captivating town in the Sacred Valley that seamlessly blends ancient Inca ruins with a vibrant, living community. This impressive site served as both a fortress and a temple, showcasing the Incas' remarkable architectural and engineering skills. Explore the massive stone terraces, intricate stonework, and the Temple of the Sun, all while immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Andean town. Ollantaytambo holds significant historical importance. It was a royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and initiated many of the Inca's most ambitious building projects. The site played a crucial role during the Spanish conquest, serving as a stronghold for the Inca resistance. Manco Inca Yupanqui, leading the resistance, successfully defended Ollantaytambo against the Spanish in 1536. The town's layout and many of its buildings have remained remarkably unchanged since Inca times. Tourists can explore the impressive ruins, climb the terraces for panoramic views, and wander through the charming streets of the town. Visit the Temple of the Sun, a massive structure built from enormous stone blocks. The town itself offers a glimpse into contemporary Andean life, with its traditional markets, colorful textiles, and friendly locals. Ollantaytambo is also a major transportation hub for those heading to Machu Picchu, with the train station located here. The town offers many restaurants serving traditional Peruvian dishes, including Pachamanca, a dish cooked in an earth oven, and Chicha, a fermented corn beverage.
