Mount Tavurvur Guide
Conquer the Crater: Hiking Mount Tavurvur, Rabaul's Iconic Volcano Guide
Mount Tavurvur, an active volcano towering over Rabaul, is an unforgettable experience for adventurous travelers. This iconic landmark, responsible for the devastating 1994 eruption, offers a challenging yet rewarding hike to its summit. Prepare to be amazed by panoramic views of the caldera, the surrounding islands, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It's a chance to witness the raw power of nature and appreciate the resilience of the local community. Tavurvur's history is etched in fire and ash. Its most recent eruption in 1994, alongside Vulcan, destroyed much of Rabaul town, leading to its relocation to Kokopo. Despite the destruction, the eruption also created new land and reshaped the landscape, leaving behind a starkly beautiful and volcanically active environment. The volcano continues to be monitored closely, a constant reminder of the region's dynamic geological activity. The main activity is, of course, hiking to the summit. The trail is steep and sandy, requiring a moderate level of fitness. It's best to hire a local guide who can provide valuable insights into the volcano's history and geology, as well as ensure your safety. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and the chance to walk around the crater rim. Be prepared for strong winds and the smell of sulfur. While hiking, you might encounter local vendors selling coconuts or other refreshments. Enjoy the local flavors and support the community.
Transportation
To reach the base of Mount Tavurvur, you can take a PMV (Public Motor Vehicle) from Kokopo towards Rabaul. Ask the driver to drop you off at the starting point of the Tavurvur hike. Taxis are also available for a more direct route. From the drop-off point, you'll need to walk a short distance to the base of the volcano where the trail begins. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended and they can often arrange transportation as part of their service.
