Cerro Ancon (Ancon Hill) Guide
Panoramic Views and Natural Beauty: Hike Ancon Hill Guide
Escape the hustle and bustle of Panama City and immerse yourself in nature at Cerro Ancon, a prominent hill offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the Panama Canal, and the surrounding rainforest. This is a must-do for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a tranquil escape with stunning vistas. Prepare for a moderate hike rewarded with unforgettable scenery and the chance to spot local wildlife. Ancon Hill played a significant role in the history of the Panama Canal. It was under U.S. control for much of the 20th century as part of the Canal Zone. In 1977, as part of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, Panama regained sovereignty over the hill. Today, it stands as a symbol of Panamanian national pride and a protected natural area. The hill's strategic location made it an important observation point during the Canal's construction and operation. The main activity at Cerro Ancon is hiking to the summit. The paved road leading to the top is approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) long and takes about 45 minutes to an hour to walk. Along the way, keep an eye out for sloths, monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife. The summit offers unparalleled views of Panama City, the Bridge of the Americas, and the ships transiting the Panama Canal. Remember to bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. There are no restaurants or shops on the hill, so pack your own snacks and drinks.
