Ancon Hill is a prominent landmark overlooking Panama City, offering stunning panoramic views of the city skyline, the Panama Canal, and the surrounding rainforest. It was originally part of the Panama Canal Zone, controlled by the United States until 1977. During this time, it housed administrative buildings and a hospital. The American flag flew atop the hill for many years, symbolizing U.S. control over the Canal Zone. In 1977, as part of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, sovereignty over Ancon Hill was returned to Panama. The Panamanian flag now proudly flies at the summit. Visitors can hike or bike to the top of Ancon Hill via a paved road or several trails. The hike is moderately challenging, but the rewarding views make it worthwhile. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, toucans, and other tropical birds. There are no restaurants or food vendors on the hill itself, but you can find plenty of dining options in Panama City. Transportation
You can reach the base of Ancon Hill by taxi or bus from Panama City. Several buses run along Avenida Balboa and stop near the entrance to the hill. Look for buses marked 'Ancon'. From the base, you can either walk or take a taxi up the hill.
