Isla Carenero Guide
Isla Carenero: Relaxed Island Vibes Guide
Isla Carenero, a small island just a short boat ride from Bocas del Toro town on Isla Colón, offers a more laid-back and tranquil alternative to its bustling neighbor. With its pristine beaches, lush rainforest, and relaxed atmosphere, Carenero is the perfect place to unwind, soak up the sun, and escape the crowds. The island is small enough to explore on foot, and you'll find a variety of charming restaurants, bars, and guesthouses dotted along the coastline. While Isla Carenero doesn't boast grand historical monuments, it played a role in the early development of the Bocas del Toro region. Its name, "Carenero," comes from the Spanish word for "careening," which refers to the practice of tilting ships on their side for cleaning and repairs. The island's sheltered coves and calm waters made it a suitable location for this activity in the past. Today, Carenero's history is more subtly present in the traditional architecture and the laid-back lifestyle of its residents. Isla Carenero offers a variety of activities for visitors. You can relax on one of the island's beautiful beaches, such as Playa Carenero, which is known for its calm waters and stunning views. Surfing is popular on the other side of the island, where you'll find more challenging waves. You can also hike through the rainforest, explore the island's hidden coves, or simply relax in a hammock with a good book. The island is also known for its delicious seafood restaurants, where you can enjoy fresh catches of the day prepared with local flavors. Be sure to try the ceviche, a traditional dish made with raw fish marinated in lime juice, onions, and cilantro.
