German Channel Guide
Dive into Paradise: Explore the Underwater Wonders of the German Channel Guide
Prepare to be amazed by the German Channel, one of Palau's most famous dive sites and a true underwater paradise. This artificial channel, blasted through the reef by German engineers in the early 20th century, has become a magnet for marine life, particularly manta rays. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a snorkeling enthusiast, the German Channel offers an unforgettable experience. The German Channel was created during the German administration of Palau to facilitate the transport of phosphate mined from the inner lagoon to the open ocean. While its creation was for industrial purposes, it inadvertently created a haven for marine life. The strong currents that flow through the channel attract plankton, which in turn attracts manta rays, who come to feed in large numbers. This predictable feeding behavior makes the German Channel one of the best places in the world to observe these magnificent creatures up close. The primary activity at the German Channel is diving and snorkeling. Divers can descend to the bottom of the channel and witness the manta rays feeding, often coming within just a few feet. Snorkelers can also enjoy the spectacle from the surface, as the manta rays often swim close to the top of the water. In addition to manta rays, the German Channel is also home to a variety of other marine life, including sharks, barracuda, and colorful reef fish. While you're out on the water, consider trying some fresh sashimi or grilled fish prepared by local fishermen – a true taste of the Palauan sea.
Transportation
The German Channel is only accessible by boat. Numerous dive operators and tour companies in Koror offer trips to the German Channel. These trips typically include transportation to and from your hotel, as well as all necessary diving or snorkeling equipment.
