Transportation
The most common way to reach the Wahiba Sands is by car. The gateway town is Al Wasil, located about 2-3 hours from Muscat. From Muscat, take Route 23 towards Sur, then follow signs to Al Wasil. From Al Wasil, you'll need a 4x4 vehicle to enter the desert. Many tour operators offer transportation and guided tours from Muscat or Al Wasil. If driving yourself, ensure your vehicle is equipped for off-road driving and that you have experience driving in sand. Deflating your tires slightly can improve traction. Bus: From Muscat, you can take a public bus towards Sur. Get off at the town of Bidiyah, which is the closest town to Al Wasil. From Bidiyah, you will need to hire a taxi or arrange transportation with a tour operator to reach Al Wasil and then the desert camps.
