Trollstigen (Trolls' Ladder) Guide

Trollstigen: Conquer the Legendary Trolls' Ladder! Guide

Prepare for an unforgettable driving experience on Trollstigen, or the Trolls' Ladder, one of Norway's most dramatic and scenic roads. This serpentine mountain road, carved into the steep mountainside, offers breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, lush valleys, and towering peaks. It's a must-see for anyone visiting the Valldal region and a true testament to Norwegian engineering. Trollstigen was officially opened in 1936 after eight years of construction. The road climbs steeply up the mountainside, featuring eleven hairpin bends that challenge even the most experienced drivers. The name "Trollstigen" comes from local folklore, where trolls were believed to inhabit the mountains. The road's dramatic landscape and challenging curves certainly lend themselves to such legends! The Trollstigen Visitor Centre at the top of the road provides stunning panoramic views and offers facilities such as a café, restaurant, souvenir shop, and restrooms. From the viewing platforms, you can marvel at the Stigfossen waterfall, which plunges down the mountainside. Hiking trails also lead from the visitor center, allowing you to explore the surrounding landscape on foot. Remember to drive carefully and take your time to enjoy the incredible scenery. While in the area, try some traditional Norwegian waffles with brown cheese (brunost) at the visitor center for a truly authentic experience.
