Flåm Railway: A Breathtaking Journey Through the Norwegian Fjords Guide

The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is one of the steepest railway lines in the world on normal gauge, offering a spectacular journey through the stunning landscapes of Norway. This scenic train ride takes you from the high mountains down to the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Prepare to be amazed by cascading waterfalls, dramatic mountains, and lush valleys. Construction of the Flåm Railway began in 1924 and took 20 years to complete. The challenging terrain required significant engineering feats, including the construction of 20 tunnels. The railway was originally built to transport goods and passengers between the fjord and the Bergen Line, the main railway line connecting Oslo and Bergen. Today, it is primarily a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world who come to experience its breathtaking scenery. The Flåm Railway offers a variety of activities for tourists. The train journey itself is the main attraction, with photo stops at scenic viewpoints, including the Kjosfossen waterfall, where you can often see a mythical "Huldra" performance. In Flåm, you can explore the Flåm Railway Museum, hike or bike in the surrounding mountains, or take a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord. While Flåm is a small village, you can find restaurants serving traditional Norwegian cuisine, including dishes featuring local fish and reindeer. Be sure to try some local craft beers as well.
