Flåm Railway Guide
Norway in a Nutshell: Experience the Breathtaking Flåm Railway Guide
The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is a spectacular train journey that descends from the high mountains down to the picturesque village of Flåm, nestled at the innermost arm of the Aurlandsfjord. This railway is renowned as one of the steepest railway lines in the world on normal gauge, offering breathtaking views of dramatic waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and lush valleys. It's a must-do experience for anyone visiting Norway and a highlight of the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour. The Flåm Railway was constructed between 1924 and 1940, a remarkable feat of engineering. The challenging terrain required extensive tunneling and careful planning to ensure the railway's safety and stability. The railway was originally built to transport goods and passengers between the fjord and the Bergen Line, but it quickly became a popular tourist attraction due to its stunning scenery. The main activity is, of course, the train ride itself. The journey takes approximately one hour each way, and the train makes a brief stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall, where you can disembark and take photos. In Flåm, you can explore the village, visit the Flåm Railway Museum, take a fjord cruise, or go hiking in the surrounding mountains. The area also offers opportunities for kayaking and cycling. The Flåm Bakery offers traditional Norwegian baked goods.
Transportation
The Flåm Railway connects to the Bergen Line at Myrdal station. You can reach Myrdal by train from Bergen or Oslo. From Flåm, you can take a ferry to other destinations in the fjords.
