Ebrington Square Guide
Ebrington Square: A Space for Peace and Celebration Guide
Ebrington Square is a vibrant public space in Derry, offering a modern contrast to the city's historic walls and landmarks. Once a military parade ground, it has been transformed into a welcoming area for events, concerts, and community gatherings. The square provides stunning views of the city and the River Foyle, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. It's a symbol of Derry's ongoing regeneration and a testament to its commitment to peace and reconciliation. Ebrington Barracks, which occupied the site for over 200 years, played a significant role in the history of Derry and Northern Ireland. Originally built for the British Army, it later housed the Royal Navy during World War II. After years of disuse, the barracks were redeveloped into Ebrington Square as part of a broader regeneration project aimed at revitalizing the city and fostering cross-community relations. The square's design incorporates elements of its military past, while creating a modern and inclusive space for all. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Ebrington Square, from attending concerts and festivals to simply relaxing and taking in the views. The square often hosts events throughout the year, including music performances, food markets, and cultural celebrations. The Peace Bridge, which connects Ebrington Square to the city center, is a must-see attraction in itself. While there are no restaurants directly on the square, numerous dining options are available in the nearby city center, offering a range of cuisines to suit all tastes.
