Walk Through History: Explore the Iconic Derry City Walls Guide

The Derry City Walls, also known as the Walls of Derry, are a remarkable testament to the city's resilience and strategic importance throughout history. As the only completely intact walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples in Europe, a walk along these walls is an essential experience for any visitor to Derry. The walls offer stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside, providing a unique perspective on Derry's past and present. Construction of the walls began in 1613, commissioned by the City of London Corporation as part of the Plantation of Ulster. They were completed in 1619 and have withstood numerous sieges, most famously the Siege of Derry in 1689. The walls are approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) in circumference and vary in height and width. They feature seven gates: Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate, Butcher's Gate, New Gate, Magazine Gate, and Castle Gate. Each gate has its own unique history and architectural features. Walking the Derry City Walls is the primary activity, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city's history and enjoy breathtaking views. You can start at any of the gates and follow the well-maintained walkway along the top of the walls. Informational plaques are placed along the route, providing historical context and insights into the various landmarks and events associated with the walls. While walking the walls, you'll find yourself near many of Derry's best restaurants and pubs, offering a chance to sample local cuisine after your historical stroll. Try a traditional Ulster Fry for breakfast or some fresh seafood for lunch.
