Carevi Kuli Fortress: A Majestic Sentinel Over Strumica Guide
Perched atop a strategic hill overlooking Strumica, the Carevi Kuli Fortress, also known as the Tsar's Towers, offers breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into the region's rich history. This imposing fortress is a must-see for history buffs, photography enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a memorable experience in North Macedonia. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore its ancient walls and imagine the battles fought within. The history of Carevi Kuli stretches back to the Roman era, with evidence suggesting the site was fortified as early as the 1st century AD. However, the fortress gained prominence during the Byzantine period and later under the rule of Tsar Samuil in the 10th and 11th centuries, hence the name "Tsar's Towers." Throughout its history, the fortress served as a crucial defensive point, witnessing numerous sieges and power struggles. It was eventually abandoned in the Ottoman period. Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts from various periods, providing valuable insights into the region's past. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of the fortress, including the towers, walls, and remnants of buildings. Walking along the ramparts offers stunning views of Strumica and the surrounding landscape. The site is particularly beautiful at sunset. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the fortress itself, Strumica offers a variety of traditional Macedonian cuisine. Be sure to try local specialties like ajvar (roasted red pepper spread), tavče gravče (baked beans), and pastrmajlija (a type of pizza).
