Red Rocks Reserve (Pariwhero): Coastal Beauty and Seal Colony Encounters Guide

Discover the rugged beauty of Red Rocks Reserve (Pariwhero), a coastal gem just a short drive from Wellington. This dramatic landscape, characterized by its distinctive red rock formations, offers stunning views of the Cook Strait and the South Island. It's a place where you can connect with nature, breathe in the fresh sea air, and perhaps even spot a colony of fur seals basking in the sun. The red rocks themselves are composed of pillow lava, formed millions of years ago during underwater volcanic eruptions. The red color comes from the oxidation of iron in the lava. Māori legend tells a different story, however, explaining that the rocks were stained red by the blood of Kupe, a Polynesian explorer, who cut himself while gathering paua (abalone) here. The area holds significant cultural and geological importance. The main activity at Red Rocks Reserve is walking the coastal track. The track is relatively easy and offers breathtaking views along the way. Keep an eye out for fur seals, which often haul out on the rocks to rest and sunbathe (especially during the winter months). Remember to keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing them. While there are no restaurants directly at the reserve, you can find cafes and eateries in the nearby suburb of Island Bay, known for its fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere.
