Chasing Waterfalls: Hike to the Majestic Whiskey Falls Guide
Embark on a captivating journey through lush native forest to discover the hidden gem of Whiskey Falls. This relatively short and easy hike is perfect for families and those seeking a refreshing escape into nature. The trail meanders alongside a cascading stream, leading you to the breathtaking Whiskey Falls, where water plunges into a crystal-clear pool below. It's an ideal spot for a picnic, a refreshing dip (if you're brave!), and simply soaking in the beauty of the surrounding rainforest. While Whiskey Falls itself doesn't have a deep historical narrative, its significance lies in its contribution to the natural ecosystem of Nelson Lakes National Park. The falls and the surrounding forest provide a habitat for a variety of native plants and animals. The name "Whiskey Falls" is rumored to have originated from early settlers who may have used the area for illicit whiskey production, but the true origin remains a local legend. Regardless of its name's origin, the falls offer a glimpse into the pristine beauty of New Zealand's natural heritage. The main activity at Whiskey Falls is hiking the track to the falls. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. Allow approximately 1-2 hours for the round trip. Once you reach the falls, take some time to admire the cascading water and the surrounding scenery. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it by the pool at the base of the falls. Remember to bring your camera to capture the stunning views. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Whiskey Falls, be sure to grab a delicious pie or pastry from one of the local bakeries in St Arnaud before or after your hike.
