Pūkaha: Where Conservation Takes Flight Guide

Welcome to Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary nestled in the heart of the Wairarapa region of New Zealand. More than just a zoo, Pūkaha is a vital conservation hub dedicated to protecting and breeding endangered native species. Prepare to be immersed in the sights and sounds of a thriving ecosystem, where you can witness the beauty of New Zealand's unique flora and fauna up close. This is a place where you can connect with nature and learn about the ongoing efforts to preserve it for future generations. Pūkaha's history is deeply intertwined with the efforts to protect the remnant of the once vast 9400 ha of native forest. The centre plays a crucial role in breeding programs for endangered birds like the Kākāriki (orange-fronted parakeet), Kōkako, and Manukura (white kiwi). The centre also provides a safe haven for other native species, including the North Island Brown Kiwi, Longfin Eels, and various native plants. The centre is managed by a partnership between the Department of Conservation, Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Trust, and the Pūkaha Mount Bruce Board. A visit to Pūkaha offers a range of engaging activities. Witness the daily kiwi feeding, a rare opportunity to see these nocturnal birds in action. Explore the native forest trails, keeping an eye out for the vibrant birdlife. Learn about the centre's conservation efforts through informative displays and guided tours. You can also participate in interactive experiences, such as planting native trees or sponsoring an animal. Don't forget to visit the cafe for a bite to eat and the gift shop for a souvenir to remember your visit.
