Putangirua Pinnacles Guide
Putangirua Pinnacles: Walk Among Giants in a Lost World Guide
Step into another world at the Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, a geological wonder located a short drive from Martinborough. These towering, otherworldly rock formations, sculpted by centuries of erosion, create a landscape that feels both ancient and alien. Famous for their appearance in the Lord of the Rings films (Paths of the Dead), the Pinnacles offer a unique and unforgettable hiking experience. Prepare to be awestruck by the sheer scale and dramatic beauty of this natural masterpiece. The Putangirua Pinnacles are the result of thousands of years of erosion. Rain and wind have gradually worn away the softer layers of rock, leaving behind these towering pillars of gravel conglomerate. The area was once under the sea, and the Pinnacles are composed of sediment deposited over millions of years. The name "Putangirua" comes from the Māori language, and its meaning is debated, but it often refers to the strange and unusual nature of the landscape. The main activity at the Putangirua Pinnacles is hiking. There are several trails to choose from, ranging in difficulty and length. The easiest option is the short walk to the lookout point, which offers stunning views of the Pinnacles from above. For a more immersive experience, take the stream bed walk, which leads you right into the heart of the Pinnacles. Be prepared to get your feet wet! Remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the Pinnacles themselves, pack a picnic to enjoy amidst this incredible scenery.
