Te Mata Peak holds significant cultural and historical importance for the local Māori people. Legend tells the story of the giant Te Mata, who attempted to bite through the Hawke's Bay hills to create a passage for his people. He died in the effort, and his body formed the distinctive shape of the peak. The area is considered sacred, and visitors are encouraged to treat it with respect. The peak was also used as a strategic lookout point during early European settlement. There are numerous ways to experience Te Mata Peak. Hike or bike to the summit via well-maintained trails that wind through native bush and farmland. Alternatively, you can drive to the top and enjoy the views from the car park. Once at the summit, take in the panoramic scenery, enjoy a picnic, or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. The peak is also a popular spot for paragliding and hang gliding. While there are no restaurants directly on the peak, the nearby towns of Havelock North and Hastings offer a wide range of culinary delights, from award-winning wineries and restaurants to casual cafes and bakeries. Hawke's Bay is renowned for its wine and fresh produce, so be sure to sample the local flavors.
