Attraction Guide: Baldwin Street, Dunedin, New Zealand

Baldwin Street Guide

Conquer the World's Steepest Street! Guide

Prepare to be amazed by Baldwin Street, officially recognized as the steepest residential street in the world! Located in Dunedin, New Zealand, this seemingly ordinary street has become a global attraction, drawing visitors eager to experience its incredible incline. Whether you're a thrill-seeker, a photographer, or simply curious, Baldwin Street offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Baldwin Street's extreme gradient is a result of the city's original street grid plan, which was laid out without considering the area's challenging topography. The street was named after William Baldwin, an Otago Provincial Councillor and newspaper founder. The steepest section has a gradient of approximately 1:2.86 (19° or 35%), meaning that for every 2.86 meters traveled horizontally, the elevation increases by 1 meter. The lower section is less steep and paved with asphalt, while the upper, steeper section is concrete to provide better traction. Visiting Baldwin Street is all about the experience! Many tourists attempt to walk or even cycle up the street, a challenging feat that provides a great photo opportunity. You can also take pictures from the bottom, capturing the street's dramatic incline. Every year, the Baldwin Street Gutbuster, a race where participants run up and down the street, is held. Another quirky tradition involves rolling Jaffas (small orange chocolate balls) down the street, a fun activity for all ages.
