It refers to the six leather belts that early settlers used to draw water from the Sesriem Canyon, a nearby natural gorge carved by the Tsauchab River. The gate itself doesn't have a long history, but it represents the starting point for countless journeys into one of the world's oldest and most spectacular deserts. At Sesriem Gate, you'll need to purchase your park permit and receive information about the park's rules and regulations. The Sesriem Canyon is located nearby and is well worth a visit. You can descend into the canyon and explore its narrow passages and pools of water, offering a refreshing respite from the desert heat. The Sesriem campsite is also located just inside the gate, providing a convenient base for exploring the area. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Sesriem Gate, the campsite and nearby lodges offer a variety of dining options, often featuring traditional Namibian cuisine.
Transportation
Sesriem Gate is located on the C19 road, approximately 300km west of Maltahöhe and 85km east of Solitaire. It is easily accessible by car. Most tour operators include transportation to Sesriem Gate as part of their Sossusvlei tours.
