Like the other vleis in the area, Hiddenvlei was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded, creating a temporary lake. Over time, the climate changed, and the river no longer reached this far inland, leaving behind a clay pan surrounded by towering sand dunes. The name "Hiddenvlei" reflects its more remote location and the sense of discovery that comes with finding this secluded oasis. The main activity at Hiddenvlei is hiking and exploring the unique landscape. The walk to Hiddenvlei is longer and more challenging than the walk to Deadvlei, requiring a good level of fitness. However, the reward is a more secluded and peaceful experience. You can wander among the petrified trees, marvel at the towering dunes, and capture stunning photographs of the surreal scenery. Transportation
Hiddenvlei is accessible by 4x4 vehicle to the parking area. From the parking area, it's a 45-minute to 1-hour walk through the sand to reach the vlei. The route is marked, but it's advisable to have a map or GPS. From Sesriem, follow the main road south towards Sossusvlei. Continue past the Sossusvlei parking area and follow the signs to Hiddenvlei.
