Hiddenvlei Guide
Uncover the Secret: Hiddenvlei's Desert Oasis Guide
Venture off the beaten path and discover the hidden gem of Hiddenvlei, a remote and less-visited clay pan within the Sossusvlei area of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. While Sossusvlei and Deadvlei draw the largest crowds, Hiddenvlei offers a more secluded and tranquil experience of the iconic Namibian desert landscape. The journey to Hiddenvlei is part of the adventure, requiring a bit more effort but rewarding you with unparalleled serenity. Hiddenvlei, like Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, was formed by the Tsauchab River, which once flowed freely into the area. Over time, the river's course shifted, leaving behind these clay pans surrounded by towering sand dunes. The name "Hiddenvlei" reflects its more remote location and the fact that it's not as easily accessible as the other vleis. To reach Hiddenvlei, you'll need to drive to the Sossusvlei parking area and then either take the 4x4 shuttle or walk the remaining distance. The walk is longer and more challenging than the walk to Deadvlei, but the reward is a sense of solitude and the opportunity to experience the desert in its purest form. Climbing the surrounding dunes offers panoramic views of the vlei and the vast desert landscape. There are no specific culinary traditions associated with Hiddenvlei itself, but the nearby Sesriem campsite and lodges offer dining options.
