Henties Bay Beach Guide
Henties Bay Beach: Angler's Paradise on the Skeleton Coast Guide
Welcome to Henties Bay Beach, a unique coastal town nestled on Namibia's famed Skeleton Coast! This isn't your typical sun-soaked, palm-fringed beach. Instead, prepare for a rugged, windswept landscape where the Atlantic Ocean meets the stark beauty of the Namib Desert. Henties Bay is renowned as an angler's paradise, drawing fishermen from across the globe seeking the thrill of catching kabeljou (cob) and steenbras. The town itself offers a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. While Henties Bay doesn't boast ancient ruins or grand historical monuments, its history is intertwined with the harsh realities of the Skeleton Coast. Originally a small fishing settlement, it grew in popularity due to its abundant fish stocks. The name "Henties Bay" is believed to be derived from a man named Hentie van der Merwe, who used the bay as a fishing spot. The surrounding coastline is littered with shipwrecks, a testament to the treacherous conditions and strong currents that have plagued sailors for centuries. These wrecks add a haunting beauty to the landscape and serve as a reminder of the power of nature. Beyond fishing, Henties Bay offers a range of activities for the adventurous traveler. Take a scenic drive along the coast, keeping an eye out for seals, dolphins, and even the occasional whale. Explore the nearby Ugab River Mouth, a haven for birdlife. For the truly adventurous, consider a guided 4x4 tour into the Skeleton Coast National Park, a vast and desolate wilderness teeming with unique flora and fauna. While Henties Bay doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, fresh seafood is a staple. Enjoy grilled kabeljou at a local restaurant or try biltong (dried, cured meat), a popular Namibian snack.
