Hsinbyume Pagoda (Myatheindan Pagoda) Guide
Hsinbyume Pagoda: A Fairytale Temple on the Irrawaddy Guide
Prepare to be transported to a whimsical world at Hsinbyume Pagoda, also known as Myatheindan Pagoda! This stunning white-washed temple complex, located near Mingun in Sagaing, is a visual masterpiece. Its unique architectural style, resembling a mythical mountain, makes it one of the most photographed and admired pagodas in Myanmar. Get ready to explore its intricate terraces and capture some unforgettable memories. Hsinbyume Pagoda was built in 1816 by Prince Bagyidaw in memory of his first wife, Princess Hsinbyume. The pagoda's design is based on the description of Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. The seven terraces surrounding the central stupa represent the seven mountain ranges that encircle Mount Meru, and the wavy balustrades symbolize the oceans. This symbolic representation of the Buddhist universe makes Hsinbyume Pagoda not only a beautiful structure but also a profound expression of faith and love. A visit to Hsinbyume Pagoda is a truly immersive experience. Climb the winding staircases and explore the different levels of the pagoda, each offering unique perspectives and photo opportunities. Admire the intricate carvings and the overall architectural brilliance. While in Mingun, be sure to also visit the Mingun Pahtodawgyi (an unfinished pagoda) and the Mingun Bell. Local vendors near the pagoda sell traditional Burmese snacks and handicrafts. Try some Thanaka (traditional Burmese sunscreen) or sample local sweets.
Transportation
The most common way to reach Hsinbyume Pagoda is by taking a boat from Mandalay to Mingun. Boats depart regularly from the Mandalay jetty. The boat ride itself is a scenic experience, offering views of the Irrawaddy River. Once you arrive in Mingun, the pagoda is a short walk from the jetty. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi or tuk-tuk from Mandalay, but the boat trip is generally preferred for its convenience and scenic value.
