Gokteik Viaduct Guide

Dare to Cross: The Gokteik Viaduct, a Thrilling Ride Through History Guide

Prepare for an unforgettable experience aboard a train that traverses the Gokteik Viaduct, a marvel of engineering and a testament to Myanmar's colonial past. This towering railway bridge, once the highest in the world, spans a deep gorge, offering breathtaking (and slightly nerve-wracking) views of the surrounding landscape. The journey across the viaduct is a slow and creaky affair, adding to the thrill and allowing you to fully appreciate the scale and age of this incredible structure. The Gokteik Viaduct was constructed in 1900 by the Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction Company. The British colonial government commissioned the bridge to extend their railway network and facilitate trade and transportation in the region. The bridge was a significant feat of engineering at the time, requiring the import of steel from the United States and the expertise of skilled engineers and laborers. For many years, it was the highest railway bridge in the world, a symbol of British engineering prowess. The primary activity at the Gokteik Viaduct is, of course, riding the train across it! The train journey from Pyin Oo Lwin to Hsipaw (or vice versa) is a popular route, offering stunning scenery and a glimpse into rural Myanmar life. The train travels at a snail's pace across the viaduct, allowing ample time to take photos and soak in the views. Be prepared for a bumpy ride and the occasional jolt! While in the area, consider exploring the surrounding countryside, visiting local villages, and hiking to nearby waterfalls. While not directly related to the viaduct, Pyin Oo Lwin is known for its strawberry farms. You can often find vendors selling fresh strawberries and strawberry-based products near the train station.
