Visitors can participate in several activities at the Mahamuni Pagoda. One of the most popular is witnessing the daily face-washing ceremony of the Buddha image, which takes place early each morning. Only men are allowed to approach the image directly to apply gold leaf, a tradition that has resulted in the statue being covered in layers of gold, giving it a unique and textured appearance.
