Shwethalyaung Buddha Guide
Behold the Reclining Majesty: Shwethalyaung Buddha Guide
The Shwethalyaung Buddha in Bago is one of Myanmar's most revered and impressive reclining Buddha images. This colossal statue, measuring 55 meters (180 feet) long and 16 meters (52 feet) high, is a breathtaking sight and a testament to the artistry and devotion of the Burmese people. A visit to Shwethalyaung is an essential part of any trip to Bago. The Shwethalyaung Buddha has a rich and turbulent history. It was originally built in 994 AD during the reign of King Migadepa. However, it was lost and forgotten for centuries after Bago was sacked in 1757. It wasn't until 1880 that the reclining Buddha was rediscovered under a thick covering of jungle growth. Restoration work began shortly after, and the Shwethalyaung has since been meticulously maintained and revered. Visitors can marvel at the sheer scale and intricate details of the Buddha image. Observe the delicate carvings on the soles of the feet, which depict scenes from the Buddha's life. You can also offer prayers and donations at the various shrines surrounding the statue. Bago is known for its Mon cuisine, so be sure to try local specialties like Mon-style curry and Hinza soup (a clear soup with vegetables) at nearby restaurants.
