The monastery complex at the summit is relatively modern, but the site's spiritual significance dates back centuries. The climb to the top, via 777 steps, is considered a pilgrimage in itself. The main activity at Mount Popa is climbing the 777 steps to the summit monastery. Be prepared for a challenging climb, especially in the heat, and watch out for the monkeys that inhabit the stairs! Once at the top, you can explore the various temples and shrines, admire the intricate artwork, and soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding plains. Remember to dress respectfully, covering your shoulders and knees. While not a culinary destination in itself, you can find simple Burmese food and snacks at the base of the mountain.
Transportation
The most common way to reach Mount Popa is by hiring a taxi or joining a tour from Bagan. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Shared taxis and buses are also available, but they may be less comfortable and take longer.
