Caves of Hercules Guide
Myth and Majesty: Explore the Legendary Caves of Hercules Guide
Venture just outside Tangier to discover the Caves of Hercules, a site steeped in mythology and natural beauty. According to legend, the mythical hero Hercules rested in these caves after completing his twelve labors. The caves offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a unique geological formation that has captivated visitors for centuries. The caves have been used by humans since the Neolithic era, and their history is intertwined with both myth and practicality. The most distinctive feature of the caves is the "Map of Africa" opening, a sea-facing aperture that, when viewed from inside, resembles the continent of Africa. This opening is believed to have been created by natural erosion, although legends attribute it to Hercules himself. In more recent times, the caves were used as a quarry, which unfortunately altered some of their original features. Today, visitors can explore the caves' interior, marvel at the unique rock formations, and enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery. The site includes a small beach and several restaurants and cafes where you can relax and soak in the atmosphere. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to the caves, the nearby restaurants offer fresh seafood and traditional Moroccan dishes.

The easiest way to reach the Caves of Hercules is by taxi from Tangier. You can negotiate a price with a grand taxi (larger taxi) for a round trip, including waiting time. Alternatively, you can take bus number 15 from Tangier to Achakar, which is a short walk from the caves.
