Zagora is a town in the Draa Valley, in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region of Morocco. Often referred to as the "Gateway to the Sahara," it's a popular starting point for excursions into the desert. While not directly on the Erg Chebbi dunes like Merzouga, Zagora offers a more accessible and less touristy experience of the Sahara. The town is surrounded by palm groves and kasbahs, offering a glimpse into the traditional life of the Draa Valley. Zagora's history is linked to its strategic location on the ancient caravan routes that crossed the Sahara. The town was a major trading center, connecting Marrakech and other northern cities with the south. A famous sign near Zagora proclaims "Tombouctou 52 jours," indicating that it would take 52 days to reach Timbuktu by camel caravan. This sign serves as a reminder of the town's historical importance as a gateway to the trans-Saharan trade. The Draa Valley itself has been inhabited for centuries, with evidence of ancient settlements and agricultural practices. In Zagora, you can visit the Tinfou Dunes, a smaller but still impressive set of dunes located a short distance from the town. Camel trekking and 4x4 tours are available to explore the dunes and surrounding desert landscape. You can also visit the nearby village of Amezrou, known for its historic kasbah and Jewish quarter. Exploring the palm groves of the Draa Valley is a must, offering a peaceful escape from the town. The local cuisine features tagines, couscous, and grilled meats, often flavored with dates and other local ingredients.
