Tamegroute: A Journey into Sufi Mysticism and Ancient Pottery Guide
Tamegroute is a small village located in the Draa Valley, south of Zagora, in the Sahara Desert. It's a hidden gem, less visited than Merzouga, but rich in history, culture, and spirituality. Tamegroute offers a unique glimpse into traditional Moroccan life, with its ancient Koranic library, renowned pottery workshops, and the influential Sufi zawiya (religious school). If you're looking for an authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience, Tamegroute is a must-see destination. Tamegroute's history is deeply intertwined with Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam. The village is home to the Zawiya Naciria, a Sufi religious center founded in the 17th century. This zawiya became a major center of learning and spirituality, attracting scholars and pilgrims from across North Africa. The Koranic library within the zawiya houses a remarkable collection of ancient manuscripts, including illuminated Qurans, treatises on medicine and astronomy, and historical documents. The pottery of Tamegroute is also famous, known for its distinctive green glaze, a technique passed down through generations. In Tamegroute, you can visit the Zawiya Naciria and explore its Koranic library (check for opening times and accessibility beforehand). You can also visit the local pottery workshops and witness the traditional techniques used to create the distinctive green pottery. Many workshops offer the opportunity to purchase pottery directly from the artisans. Exploring the village itself is an experience, with its narrow streets, traditional mud-brick architecture, and friendly locals. While in the Draa Valley, be sure to sample the local dates, a staple of the region's diet.
