Agdal Gardens Guide

Tranquil Oasis: Escape to the Agdal Gardens Guide

Escape the bustling city of Marrakech and find serenity in the Agdal Gardens, a sprawling historic garden south of the city. These gardens offer a peaceful retreat with olive groves, fruit trees, and large water basins, all set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. It's a perfect place to unwind and experience a different side of Marrakech. The Agdal Gardens were originally created in the 12th century by the Almohad dynasty and later expanded by the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century. The name "Agdal" means "walled meadow" in Berber, reflecting its original purpose as a fertile agricultural area enclosed by walls. The gardens served not only as a source of food and water but also as a place for the Sultan and his court to relax and enjoy the natural beauty. The large basins were designed to provide irrigation and also served as reservoirs for the city. Visitors can stroll through the olive groves, admire the fruit trees (orange, lemon, fig, and pomegranate), and relax by the large water basins. The gardens are particularly beautiful in the late afternoon when the light casts a golden glow over the landscape. It's a great place for a picnic, a leisurely walk, or simply to escape the heat and noise of the city. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly within the gardens, you can find vendors selling refreshments and snacks near the entrances.
