Henna Souk: Aromatic Spices and Natural Beauty in the Heart of Fes Guide
Step into a world of vibrant colors and intoxicating aromas at the Henna Souk, also known as Place Seffarine, in Fes. This bustling marketplace is a sensory feast, offering a wide array of natural beauty products, spices, and traditional remedies. More than just a shopping destination, the Henna Souk provides a fascinating glimpse into Moroccan culture and the time-honored traditions of natural healing and adornment. Prepare to be captivated by the sights, smells, and sounds of this unique corner of the Fes medina. The Henna Souk has been a center for trade and commerce for centuries, evolving from a simple marketplace to a specialized hub for natural products. Its name derives from the abundance of henna, a natural dye used for centuries in Morocco for body art, hair coloring, and textile dyeing. Over time, the souk expanded to include a variety of other natural products, such as kohl (eyeliner), argan oil, rosewater, and a wide range of spices used in traditional Moroccan cuisine and medicine. The souk's location near the Kairaouine Mosque has also contributed to its historical significance, as it served as a meeting point for scholars and traders alike. At the Henna Souk, you can browse a colorful array of henna powders, kohl pencils, and traditional makeup. Engage with the vendors, learn about the different products, and perhaps even try a henna tattoo. The souk is also a great place to purchase spices for your own cooking, from fragrant saffron to warming ginger. Don't forget to sample some of the local delicacies, such as dates and nuts, which are often sold alongside the beauty products. While you're there, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship of the metalworkers in Place Seffarine, who create beautiful brass and copperware using traditional techniques.
