Unearth the Roman Past: Explore Ancient Duklja Guide
Step back in time and explore the fascinating ruins of Duklja, an ancient Roman city located just a few kilometers outside of Podgorica. This archaeological site offers a glimpse into the rich history of the region, showcasing the remnants of a once-thriving urban center. Wander through the remains of basilicas, villas, and public buildings, imagining life in this Roman outpost. Duklja's history stretches back to the Roman era, flourishing from the 1st to the 6th centuries AD. It served as an important administrative and economic center in the Roman province of Praevalitana. The city was eventually destroyed by earthquakes and Slavic invasions, leaving behind the ruins we see today. Excavations have revealed impressive mosaics, intricate architectural details, and a wealth of artifacts that provide valuable insights into Roman life in the Balkans. Visitors can explore the site at their own pace, wandering among the crumbling walls and imagining the bustling city that once stood there. Look out for the remains of the Episcopal Basilica, the city's forum, and the impressive Roman villa. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to the site itself, nearby Podgorica offers a wide range of Montenegrin cuisine, including grilled meats, fresh seafood, and local cheeses. Consider trying *kačamak*, a traditional polenta-like dish, or *ćevapi*, grilled minced meat, for a taste of local flavors.
