A Sanctuary on the Sea: Our Lady of the Rocks Guide

Our Lady of the Rocks is a captivating artificial island in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro, home to a beautiful church of the same name. This unique attraction offers stunning views of the bay and a fascinating story behind its creation. A visit here is a must for anyone exploring the Montenegrin coast. The island was created over centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath. After finding an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the sea in 1452, they began throwing rocks into the water at that spot after each successful voyage. Over time, this practice created the island we see today. The church, built in 1630, houses a collection of paintings, including 68 works by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century Baroque artist from Perast. Visitors can take a boat trip to the island from Perast or Kotor. Explore the church and admire the artwork, including the famous tapestry woven by Jacinta Kunić-Mijović, who spent 25 years creating it while waiting for her sailor husband to return. Enjoy the panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding mountains. Many boat tours include a stop at the nearby island of Sveti Đorđe (St. George), although it is not open to the public. While on Perast, sample fresh seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants.
