Lake Hrid, nestled high in the Accursed Mountains (Prokletije), is a breathtaking alpine lake renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Often referred to as the "Gem of the Accursed Mountains," this glacial lake offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Its crystal-clear waters, surrounded by rugged peaks and lush meadows, create a picture-perfect landscape. Formed by glacial activity, Lake Hrid sits at an altitude of approximately 1,970 meters (6,463 feet). Local legends attribute magical properties to the lake, adding to its mystique. The lake's pristine environment is home to various plant and animal species, making it a valuable ecological site. The surrounding mountains offer challenging hiking trails and panoramic views. Hiking to Lake Hrid is the primary activity for tourists. Several trails lead to the lake, ranging in difficulty from moderate to challenging. Swimming in the lake is possible, but the water is typically very cold. The surrounding area is ideal for picnicking and enjoying the stunning scenery. While there are no restaurants directly at the lake, you can find traditional Montenegrin cuisine in Gusinje, such as *cicvara* (a cornmeal dish with cheese and cream) and fresh trout.
Transportation
The most common way to reach the trailhead for Lake Hrid is by car or taxi from Gusinje. The road to the trailhead can be rough in places, so a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. From the trailhead, it's a hike of several hours to reach the lake.
