Citadel: Budva's Historic Heart & Panoramic Views Guide

The Citadel of Budva stands as a majestic testament to the city's rich history and strategic importance. Perched on a rocky promontory jutting out into the Adriatic Sea, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, the Old Town, and the surrounding mountains. A visit to the Citadel is a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the various empires and cultures that have shaped Budva's identity. The Citadel's history stretches back to ancient times, with evidence suggesting Illyrian and Roman settlements on the site. However, the structure we see today largely dates back to the Venetian Republic, which ruled Budva for nearly 400 years. The Venetians significantly fortified the Citadel, transforming it into a formidable defensive stronghold against Ottoman incursions. Over the centuries, it has also served as a military base for the Austrians and other powers. Within its walls, you'll find remnants of various historical periods, including the Church of Santa Maria in Punta, dating back to the 9th century, and the ruins of barracks and other military structures. Today, the Citadel is a major tourist attraction, offering a variety of activities. Visitors can explore the ramparts, wander through the narrow passageways, and admire the stunning views from the observation points. The Citadel also houses a library, a restaurant, and a museum showcasing the history of Budva. For a truly unforgettable experience, consider visiting the Citadel at sunset, when the sky is ablaze with color and the Old Town is bathed in a golden glow. The restaurant offers traditional Montenegrin cuisine, often featuring fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients.
