Yolyn Am: An Icy Oasis in the Heart of the Gobi Guide
Yolyn Am, also known as Eagle Valley, is a stunning natural gorge located in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of the Gobi Desert. This unique landscape features towering rock walls, a narrow canyon floor, and, surprisingly, a year-round ice field in its depths. It's a remarkable contrast to the arid desert surroundings and a must-see destination for nature lovers visiting Mongolia. Yolyn Am has been a protected area since 1965, recognized for its unique geological formations and diverse wildlife. The name "Eagle Valley" comes from the numerous eagles that inhabit the area. The ice field, which can persist even during the hottest summer months, is formed by snowmelt that freezes in the shaded canyon. This phenomenon creates a microclimate that supports a variety of plant and animal life not typically found in the Gobi Desert. Visitors to Yolyn Am can hike through the canyon, marvel at the ice field (depending on the time of year), and observe the local wildlife, including eagles, ibex, and pikas. The valley offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography. There is a small museum at the entrance to the park that provides information about the local flora and fauna. While hiking, be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the terrain can be uneven. While not specifically known for culinary traditions within the valley itself, nearby tourist camps offer traditional Mongolian meals.
Transportation
Reaching Yolyn Am requires traveling to Dalanzadgad, the capital of Ömnögovi Province. From Ulaanbaatar, you can take a domestic flight to Dalanzadgad, which is the most convenient option. Alternatively, you can take a bus or hire a private jeep, but the journey is long and can take 10-12 hours. From Dalanzadgad, you'll need to hire a local driver with a 4x4 vehicle to reach Yolyn Am, which is located within the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park.
