Yolyn Am: The Vulture's Mouth - A Gobi Desert Oasis Guide

Yolyn Am, also known as the "Valley of the Eagles" or "Vulture's Mouth," is a deep and narrow gorge located in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of the Gobi Desert, near Dalanzadgad, Mongolia. This stunning natural wonder is famous for its year-round ice field, a remarkable phenomenon in the arid desert environment. The valley offers a refreshing escape from the heat and a chance to witness unique flora and fauna adapted to the harsh conditions. Yolyn Am's formation is a result of millions of years of erosion by a small stream flowing through the mountains. The narrow gorge creates a microclimate that allows ice to persist even during the summer months. The valley is part of the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, established to protect the diverse ecosystem and unique geological features of the region. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including ibex, argali sheep, and various bird species, including the Lammergeier (bearded vulture), from which the valley gets its name. Visitors to Yolyn Am can hike through the gorge, marveling at the towering rock walls and the ice field (which may be smaller or absent depending on the time of year). The hike is relatively easy and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for wildlife, especially birds of prey soaring overhead. There is a small museum at the entrance to the park that provides information about the local flora, fauna, and geology. While there are no specific culinary traditions within Yolyn Am itself, you can enjoy traditional Mongolian cuisine in Dalanzadgad before or after your visit.
