Eagle Valley Guide
Hike Through Ice Year-Round in Eagle Valley (Yolyn Am) Guide
Eagle Valley, or Yolyn Am, is a stunning gorge located in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of the Gobi Desert. Despite being in the desert, this valley is famous for its year-round ice field, a remarkable phenomenon caused by the narrowness and depth of the gorge, which prevents sunlight from reaching the bottom. It's a refreshing escape from the desert heat and a unique natural wonder. Yolyn Am has been a protected area since 1965 and is part of the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. The valley is named after the Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture (Yol in Mongolian), which is commonly seen soaring overhead. The area is rich in wildlife, including ibex, argali sheep, and various bird species. The unique microclimate supports a diverse range of plant life, making it a haven for nature lovers. Visitors can hike through the valley, marveling at the ice field (which may be smaller or even absent in late summer), and enjoying the stunning scenery. There are opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. A small museum at the entrance provides information about the park's flora, fauna, and geology. The hike to the end of the ice field and back takes approximately 2-3 hours. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be uneven and icy.
