Truk Lagoon, now known as Chuuk Lagoon, is a world-renowned destination for wreck diving. This underwater museum holds the remains of numerous Japanese ships and aircraft sunk during Operation Hailstone in World War II. During World War II, Chuuk Lagoon served as Japan's primary naval base in the Pacific. In February 1944, the United States launched Operation Hailstone, a surprise attack that decimated the Japanese fleet stationed there. Over 60 ships and 250 aircraft were sunk, creating an underwater graveyard that has since become a diver's paradise. The wrecks are remarkably well-preserved due to the lagoon's sheltered waters and lack of strong currents. The primary activity in Truk Lagoon is, of course, diving. Numerous dive operators offer guided tours to the various wrecks, catering to divers of all skill levels. Inside the wrecks, you can find artifacts such as tanks, trucks, ammunition, and even personal belongings of the crew.
