Step back in time and explore the ancient Mayan city of Muyil, nestled within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. This archaeological site offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, providing a glimpse into the lives of the people who once thrived here. Unlike the larger, more crowded Mayan ruins, Muyil offers a more intimate and tranquil experience, allowing you to connect with the past in a serene setting. Muyil, also known as Chunyaxché, dates back to around 300 BC, reaching its peak during the Late Postclassic period (1200-1500 AD). It was an important trading port, connecting the Caribbean coast with the interior of the Yucatan Peninsula via a network of canals and lagoons. The site features several well-preserved structures, including the iconic Castillo, a 17-meter-tall pyramid that dominates the landscape. The architecture reflects a blend of Petén and Puuc styles, showcasing the cultural influences that shaped this ancient city. Visitors to Muyil can explore the archaeological site, wander through the jungle trails, and take a boat tour through the Sian Ka'an lagoons. The boat tour offers a chance to float down the ancient Mayan trade route, passing through mangrove tunnels and observing the diverse wildlife of the biosphere reserve. Keep an eye out for birds, crocodiles, and other fascinating creatures. After exploring the ruins, indulge in some local Yucatecan cuisine at nearby restaurants, savoring traditional dishes like cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) or sopa de lima (lime soup).
Transportation
From Tulum, you can take a colectivo (shared van) heading south towards Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance to Muyil. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi from Tulum. The entrance to the ruins is located just off the main highway.
